The past several months students met with each other in class Zooms to share their own music! The effect was astonishing as classmates came to learn the musical side of each others lives. It was a privilege for me to see that there is SO MUCH music happening at home beyond what we do in our music class. Way to go Costello and Wattles families! We heard rock guitars, drum sets, clarinet, acoustic guitars, harmonicas, Indian drums. Students sang out oldies but goodies, favorites from childhood, jazz classics, and broadway hits. The warmth, the connection, the acceptance, the celebration of each other...the sense that music really is for everyone, to enjoy making and experiencing was alive and well. Hearing a student sing a solo of piece that was inspired by our 5th Grade Choir really made us realize the powerful effect kids have when they sing for one another. Thank you to all my students for inspiring one another and inspiring me! Here's something fun for your Friday! Thyra Header's new book "How Do You Dance?" is full of ideas. My challenge to you, Musicians, is to teach a family member some of these new moves in the pictures below and/or create a few of your own. Moving joyfully gives our bodies a big boost! Here are some tracks if you are looking for a little more inspiration....Ready, set.... Family Dance Break time!
Hello Musicians! Oh happy sunny weekend we had! I hope you soaked up all the sun. My favorite part was hiking with my family. I noticed my kids humming these tunes from our family playlist as they hiked around happily. What sunny spring day song would you rather hum/sing?
Here is the answer to the Hidden Song! If you are just joining us now, no biggie, just hit play after you read this. True story: about 80 of my former Bemis students sang this at their Spring Concert one year. We included the 2-part round, metallophones and glockenspiels (aka bells). It was a hit! If you like a good challenge like me, try singing this roller coaster of a song. Here are the resources:
PS Funny Fact-My kids were hearing this in the background as I was working on it for you and it is already stuck in their heads having only heard it twice! I can tell because they are randomly singing little phrases of it as they take their tubs and get ready for bed. Awwwwww, so sweet. PSS Remember you can always send me your singing. I would love to hear your voice. Voice recorder or a video under a minute to [email protected]! Miss you! Mrs. Pyzik
I bet you are curious what song is hiding, where and why is it hiding? Read on, my curious friend and find out for yourself! The song is called Spring Pageant. It is song #37-ish on a movie soundtrack album, therefore you would not have heard it in the actual movie. Hmmm, why not? I'm un-hiding it for you here, because, well, it is so catchy!! As to what movie it was hidden in, you will have to listen to it and read the lyrics below to find out. For even more fun, give it a sing. It jumps, bounces, twists and turns in your voice like a roller coaster. And if your one of those people who like a good challenge, try singing the second part in the 2 part round!
Boy, do I miss you all! I miss jamming with you all together in our classroom, your laughter, your voices, ALL of it. I'm thinking of spring music that inspires me, but as I write this, it is snowing, whaaat?!
Confession: We do break out into song and dance in my house as a daily act. Do you? If not, you should try it. Garunteed to bring on the smiles and often, the sillies. Sometimes some fabulous, expressive music-ing results. So here's one that has inspired thousands of my students over the years to jump around, skip around and sing their little hearts out. I can't believe it, "Here Comes the Snow!" PS Don't be too serious when you sing, you don't want to wish us into more snow, noooooo! :) Pages on our website are ever-changing from year to year. Months ago our 5th grade vocalists embarked on a challenge issued by Dr. DiPonio to compose oriignal lyrics and melody for a Costello School Pep Song. In 3 separate choir classes our 5th grade musicians collaborated on padlet and worked through many lunch recesses to polish a finished product. The result is a stunning piece of original music which will live on at Costello long after our 5th leaves. Thank you for your work 5th graders and additional thanks to our focus group team who wrapped it up for us this week! Next year's 4th gong into 5th Choir will be a part of teaching it to the whole school! We look forward to that!
